Chaz Lowery, whose most recent court record lists him as homeless, was discovered unresponsive during a routine cell check at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 15, according to prison officials. Staff immediately attempted CPR and called 911, but despite desperate life-saving efforts by Lancaster City Fire and EMS personnel, Lowery was pronounced dead at the scene.

There was no outward indication of trauma or foul play, but authorities have not ruled out any possibilities. The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office, Lancaster City Police, and prison officials have launched a full investigation into the mysterious death.

Lowery had been locked up at Lancaster County Prison on March 13 after Ephrata Borough police arrested him for drug possession. He was being held on $40,000 bail. Court records show he had a prior drug-related arrest in January.

Prison administration labeled his death as a "medical incident," but the exact cause remains unknown. The coroner’s office is expected to release its findings in the coming days.
